I’m sure you’ve heard this expression before; to some, it’s their life motto and for most, it’s the best advice. I’m talking about: “Follow Your Heart.” Because why not, right? If I want to move to Paris, why shouldn’t I? Or if I want to buy the pink house with the white picket fence, what is stopping me from getting what I’ve always wanted? This is usually followed by “Do what makes you happy.” It sounds all nice and sweet. Until what doing what I thought would make me happy doesn’t.  Or sometimes following my heart may lead me into troubled waters.

Why Does My  Heart  Get Me in Trouble?

Why do I get into trouble when I let my heart guide me? I thought I knew what was best for me. If only, I had listened to my brain first!

These are all too familiar phrases, they’re actually pretty cliched. If there was ever a set of statements that could sum up the human heart and mind, it would be these.

If following your heart is such good advice then why does it cause so many troubles? Because following your heart is actually sinful. The Bible has not so many good things to say about the nature of the human heart.

Jeremiah 17:9

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (KJV)

While the world is telling you to follow your heart, the Word of Truth is telling you, “don’t follow your heart, it’s deceitful.” We are born with the propensity to sin, and until we surrender that nature to YAH, we will continue to run into evil. Every single desire that comes out from an unrepentant heart will be selfish, sinful, filthy, and prideful to name a few.

Of course, there are some desires that may not be evil-intentioned, many are even good things. But if our desires do not align with God’s plans for our lives, then we need to submit ourselves to the will of the One who knows best. Because even “good” desires can lead to sin and death.

Genesis 6:5

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

So What Do I Do Now?

God loves us too much to let us be guided by a deceitful heart. This is why He has instilled in our hearts a void that can only be filled by Him. When this void is filled by His Presence and by His love, we no longer feel the need to intoxicate it with materialism or anything else. Our desires will be to be filled with more of His Presence. But first, we must ask God to create in us clean heart (Psalm 51:10). And God will give a new heart of flesh and take away the heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26). This is the only way to a healthy heart.

Not Just For the Unbeliever

I wanted to kick off the year with this reminder. Those of us that have been Christians for many years sometimes need to be reminded of the change that transformed our lives. Somewhere, in the busyness of life, we lost the focus and clarity. That even if we pray, read the Bible and go to church, we still fall into the “happiness” trap. We wonder about some desires we stashed deep inside. But don’t stop to ask God if the desire is purely human or part of His. The truth is that we need to renew our hearts every day. Asking for a new heart was not a one-time prayer.

Why not start the new year with a new planner?

The Declaration of My Heart

I want to start 2018 with this declaration: I will not follow my heart. No matter how badly I may want some things, I will seek His will above mine. Yes, it’s hard to let go sometimes, but it’s harder still to hold onto something that is not meant for my good. Not only for my good but for my ETERNAL good. And not only for my future, but to glorify YAH, which is the most important work before me.
